Bench Fabricator Wanted

 

Scientific Glass International is seeking a Bench Fabricator to develop Quartz glass products from raw glass material to required dimension applying knowledge of glass technology and glass blowing techniques. Experience preferred. High School Graduate required; must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Starting pay ranges from $10.00 - $25.00 depending upon experience. Benefits include 80% paid medical, 401k, vacation, bonuses, sick days and paid holidays. Work week is Monday – Friday 6:00am to 2:30pm (40 hours) with overtime possible.

 

Specific tasks include:

     
 

i

Develops product from blueprint specifications supplied by customer with raw glass material provided.
     
 

i

Heats glass tubing to pliable stage, using gas flame.
     
 

i

Shapes, bends, or joins sections of blown glass tubing, using flaring, pressing, and flattening hand tools and stop cork.
     
 

i

Inspects and measures product to verify conformance to specifications, using instruments such as micrometers, calipers, height gauge, and ruler.
     
 

i

May anneal product, using annealing oven.
     
 

i

May cut glass tubing to specified size and polish tube edges, using hand cutting and polishing wheels.
     
 

i

Perform other tasks as directed by management/Production Manager.

Support the glassblowing needs of the Institute and other departments within the University. Duties will include the fabrication of a wide variety of scientific glassware from blueprints and drawings and the performance of other related duties as required. Will manage a glassblowing shop. Management of the shop will require the ability to determine costs and priorities of work orders, requisition necessary supplies and equipment. Knowledge of the characteristics of various glass, silica and quartz materials, skill in the manipulation of glass, and the ability to operate machine tools. Experience in the design of custom apparatus, fabrication of the parts and their subsequent assembly into the completed piece of apparatus. Knowledge of chemical silvering or gold plating of glass and vacuum-jacketed apparatus. Proficiency in high vacuum techniques, experience in the fabrication of larger apparatus and skill in making graded seats and metal-to-glass seals are required. Ability to act as consultant on glassblowing in the design of special apparatus for research purposes, indicating the feasibility and suggesting alternatives and simplifications to scientists and students and instruct faculty and students in attaining glassblowing skills and write operating instructions for newly developed apparatus. Responsibilities: Performs duties of a principal scientific glassblower. Design, construct and repair complex glass apparatus. Consults with researchers on the design of apparatus to be fabricated or repaired. Assist researchers in locating/identifying suppliers of apparatus/equipment. Manage operations of the glass shop including budget planning, prioritizing work orders, estimating jobs costs, preparing reports, coordinating jobs with outside vendors and shops, ordering of supplies and parts. Perform periodic preventative maintenance on shop equipment and cleans shop.
 
Requirements: Demonstrated experience and expert skills in glassblowing sufficient to repair and construct elaborate scientific apparatus to specifications of departmental and campus researchers. Knowledge to determine repair-ability to elaborate scientific apparatus. Ability to operate machine tools. Ability to manage glass shop operations.
 
Special Conditions of Employment: Non smoking work environment. Work occasional evenings/nights. Work overtime and occasionally on weekends as needed, usually on short notice to meet operational needs.
 
Physical Requirements: Position requires lifting up to 50 lbs.

OEM Specialty Glass (a division of CPI International) is currently seeking a talented Glassblower to join our team in Denver Colorado. We operate out of an 8,500 square ft. facility well equipped to fabricate all types of high tolerance glassware out of quartz and borosilicate. We specialize in ICP glassware, general lab ware, repairs, and custom fabrications for customers worldwide. Each glassblower is provided with his/her own 12’x12’ work area equipped with a lathe, full set of tools, and access to a full assortment of firepower from bench /carriage burners to hand /micro torches. Lathe work is predominant, but bench work is sometimes required, as is cutting, grinding, lapping, and milling within tolerances as tight as .02mm. We are looking for a team player with some basic skills and the ability to learn the techniques that make us an industry leader. Compensation is based on ability and practical experience. Scientific Glassblower
