Lathe Tips and Tricks – Instructor: Skip Huckaby

The Glass lathe is a unique tool as it can act as an extra set of hands. Chucks, burners, hand torches, and tooling can be made to be used on the lathe; this seminar will introduce several of hte most common items and their uses. The instructor’s favorite large and small hand torcheswill be exhibited and discussed. A display of lathe burners and special tooling will be used to demonstrate what is possible to do on a glass lathe. This is a good class for beginners and experienced veterans alike, so all can contribute and share knowledge – as we all have our techniques based on the amount of tooling at our disposal.

Yoga-based Exercises for Flameworkers – Instructor: Sabrina Belanger

This seminar will introduce exercises for flameworkers and furnace workers who stand or sit, to enable them to be functionally fit for life. Exercises covered will focus on hands, arms, upper body, core, back, and breathing exercises. Attendees can practice the material covered safely at home or in the gym after the symposium. The seminar will include exercises taken from yoga, somatics, strength training, and stretching. This seminar is geared to all ages and fitness levels; no prior fitness training or yoga required.

What to bring:

Workout clothes: Please wear breathable comfortable loose/stretchy clothing since you will be moving
Water bottle
The workshop will be taught barefoot; or please bring a pair of indoor sport shoes.
Yoga mat if you have one or long towel like a beach towel
Eat lightly before this seminar
Avoid wearing scented products

Financial Strategies for Small Business – Instructor: Victor Mathews

This course will focus on product pricing and costing for a small business and items to consider when determining the product margin needed to survive and support growth. The seminar will examine the relationship between price and cost, internal and external cost factors, and determining the mysterious overhead factor. A discussion will follow on direct versus indirect, fixed and variable costs and what to consider when establishing a pricing structure for products and services.

Bring an idea to this Seminar and, as Editor, I will help you come up with an article worthy of being published in Fusion or in any professional journal. Working together, we will create an outline, assemble the material, organize it, and write it down. At the end of the Seminar, all that will be needed to complete the article will be any desired pictures and captions. This process will highlight how writing an article can be less complicated than you may think!

Gas Use and Safety in the Glass Shop – Instructors: Dylan Scott and Jeffery Smith

Topics covered will include issues related to gas delivery including hose types, splitters, piping and manifolds. Other consideration will be given to regulators, flow meters, cylinder vs. dewar, and bulk options. Safety issues will also be discussed including general PPE, torch-worker-specific PPE, cylinder safety, cryogenic liquid safety, and flash back arrestors. Dylan Scott is the Arizona South District Manager for Airgas West Region. Jeffery Smith is the Operations Manager for Airgas West Region.

Glass Color Theory: Understanding and Controlling the Variables – Instructor: Michael Hengler

In this half day (four hour) seminar, Michael Hengler will discuss and explain, through demonstrations on the torch using with multiple color examples, the many facets of how to control and render desired color results. Topics of consideration will cover, but not be limited to the following: flame settings, color chemistry, distance from flame, flame size, premix vs. surface mix, gas composition, psi of regulators, annealers (their power output, calibration, and soak times), etc. The objective of this workshop is to give the glass artist a conceptual foundation in understanding glass color theory in order to troubleshoot and resolve color conundrums.
